Here we find a 1983 (look at the plate) Defender (look above the grille). More than 25 years old and the perfect car to import to the US. Buyers love Land Rovers and you could import it and sell on for good money.

Who can tell me why this might not be quite such a good idea?

Import it only to discover massive rust holes and an engine that's seized up.

If you can inspect it yourself (or by someone you trust) and can make sure it's actually from '83, hasn't had its VIN swapped and isn't rotten underneath it's a great idea. Depending on the price, obviously.

Is it LHD or RHD?

Too bad the Defender nameplate was introduced in 1990, so no import for you. If it really was an '83, it would say "Land Rover 110" on the badge on top of the grille.

You, sir or Madam, get today's award.

It's quite a big thing to make your Land Rover seem older so as avoid paying road tax.

No, that's not the issue!

Aha! I misunderstood your intention then. VIN swapped Defenders have been all over Jalopnik recently. Luckily this isn't an issue with the BMW E30 Tourings I'm looking at.

Should not be a Defender, it should be a Land Rover 110 as it's supposedly from 83.

Hmmm, so in 2015 I might be able to make a bit of money buying Defenders and shipping them to the States.

Neat :)

You could, although I'm guessing this isn't a market you'll have to yourself and you'll need to be sure about what exactly you're exporting. Cars imported to the US only become clean and safe when they're genuinely 25. Sticking, say, newer, cleaner engines and safer other bits into an otherwise qualifying car may make it less clean and less safe.

Gotcha. Do you know whether it's from the manufacture date or date of registration, and is it done year-by-year or month-by-month? For instance, can a car built in 1989, but in August still fall foul of the 25 year rule?

If I can find LHD ones they might find a bigger market, although people might appreciate the Britishness of RHD.

As far as I can make out it's just "over 25 years old". I couldn't find a definition of that but logically it would mean that the vehicle was manufactured at least 25 years and one day before importation . Logic may not enter into it of course as we're talking law here. How one is to determine year of manufacture I have no idea.

Incidentally, LRs go for silly money in the US. I tried a quick Google and found this one which is rhd. Modified ones with lhd, petrol engines, automatic boxes etc go for $50,000 or more, sometimes much more.

Ok now that is a serious money-spinner then :) the DVLA usually has date of manufacture details if you do a vehicle search.

So, buy Defender here for £5000. Export to the States and sell for £13,000 (perhaps £10,000 when the market gets busier).

Easy £3k profit ;)
